Even at the time this story was written, the lovecrqft presented lacks the punch Lovecraft usually instills at the climax. It includes an ambitious description of the alien society, their cities, technology, religion and history, including some sociological satire, with additional intriguing loveraft of other, even deeper and more hellish underground realms.

He discovers a scroll left wl a member of the explorer Coranado’s party and learns that the mound is in fact a portal to a vast underground civilization.

It was the ghoulish shade of decay, antiquity, and dissolution; the putrid dripping eidolon of unwholesome revelation, the awful baring of that which the merciful earth should always hide.

He is now commonly regarded lovecraff one of the most influential horror writers of the 20th Century, exerting widespread and indirect influence, and frequently compared to Edgar Allan Poe. I’ll just say that it was an immensely enjoyable novella. The story begins, with the narrator explaining his origins. The story prior to the translating loevcraft the manuscript is also really well done.


Although Lovecraft’s readership was limited during his life, his reputation has grown over the decades. Lovecraft didn’t do a lot of longer works, and it shows with this story. Still, in the end, ‘The Mound’ does do some amazing things right.

This page was last edited on 4 Decemberat I liked the way this story links into the real history of the area. The narrative is constantly stopped short with ‘I cannot bear to describe what I have seen’, and just telling us something is too awful to imagine does not automatically make it bloody scary. In the eight intervening years no one had been near the place, and few indeed had even cared to level a spy glass at it.

No trivia or quizzes yet. Well wasn’t this a pleasant little surprise. Meanwhile, they live under the earth in enormous, stable cavities, complete with their own sky and weather. This story also mentions Nitocris and Nephren-Ka briefly.

The village was settled less than half a century ago, but the local Native American tribes know a lot more about what is really below the mound, and although the narrator finds a scroll dating from the time of the conquistadores, it is young compared to the ancient horrors beneath the mound.

With the sight of the full moon before him, he proclaims, “There came to me the purest ecstasy I have ever known.

Perhaps the best in the Lovecraft-bishop trilogy, though I have a soft-corner for “Medusa’s Coil” The Mound is probably the least acclaimed and least known novella by Lovwcraft. Part of the reason is the extremely slow build as well as well of it just not being all that horrific when one compares his other stories. The story concerns an academic who comes to Binger, Oklahoma to investigate an old mound and the ghosts who haunt it.

I’m glad I stuck with this story to the end. Refresh and try again. While the background story offers another interesting take on Lovecraft’s cosmic gods and their activities in the past, the main narration suffers from poor pacing and predictable tumhlo. This book is not yet featured on Listopia.

Those who genuinely reason, like his protagonists, gamble with sanity.
