Back when I first picked up Shards of Honor as a Baen paperback with mediocre cover art this is true for the entire series, I’m afraid, even the omnibus editions, which seems to be Baen’s preference for all their covers and not to my taste at allI had no idea it would lead to such an impressive franchise over the next three decades and winning a stack of Hugo, Nebula and Locus Awards and nominations along the way, including some excellent novellas like Mountains of Mourning.


Damn, do you really have to be so enthusiastic about this? This was a fun start to an interesting series. In some ways I think this is the darkest one in the series, though, possibly excepting the much-later Memory–Cordelia, being a woman, mcmastfr some different trials and dangers than the main character of most of the books in the series.

The strength of the novel is really in the characters which is something that works for me.

I continue to like the method of unfolding worldbuilding that Bujold employs, giving out parts of the whole through the characters and their actions.

I hope both of them will be developed more in series. Separated by wormholes, their love bound them together!

Basically, you have people jumping from one spaceship onto another overtaking power and talking at length about political intrigue. Although both main characters serve in their respective military or the closest equivalentthe novel doesn’t really dwell on the military action going on too much so I wouldn’t necessarily call it military sci-fi.

I mean, given the lack of gravity with which the author deals with the issue, she might as well have been talking about growing anemic seaweed as a hobby or something. In the courtship of Cordelia Naismith and Aral Vorkosigan, this book reminds me of Regency Romances in her reviewElizabeth calls then them the space-faring equivalent of Anne Elliot and Wentworth, which sounds about right. Shards of Honor is an eminently readable novel but lacks any originality. Second, it is possible that I am not very familiar with space-opera subgenre of sci-fi, but if Shards of Honour is a fair representation of hojor, I am never picking up anything like this again.
